Ableton live sync (again)

Download the associated patches as patches, collectives and standalone applications here: http://milkcrate.com.au/_other/downloads/max_patches/MIDI_network/

In order to run the patches and collectives, you will need to download the Max/MSP runtime from cycling74.com.

This is a follow-on post from a previous one. I couldn't sleep this morning, so i decided to try sending data using the mxj net.maxhole object in order to sync and control Live on the iMac G5 from the MacBook . It worked pretty well - the timing was surprisingly acceptable.

The patches are simple of course.

sending

receiving

Hello, hope this is not a double post.

I am trying to sync two macbook pros running ableton live. We are currently using the OSX network midi port to send receive sync, and it is acceptable as long as we are running crucial timing parts on one machine. But we would like to achieve better results.

I am wanting to try this maxhole method, but I am wondering if I need the full version of max, or if I can use the runtime?

thanks in advance

Hi there patrick,
Thanks for your comment.

You should not need the full version of Max/MSP. It should work in runtime. Or as a standalone.
You can d/l the runtime from cycling74.com

I have uploaded the patches as patches, as runtime collectives and as standalone applications.

Please see the original post for the URL.

Regards,

Sebastian

Thanks Sebastian, I can't believe I didnt see those links before...wasnt paying attention.

I downloaded all teh files, I have it sending and receiving, but my sync is very unstable...the tempo is constantly fluttering to random bpms....have you ever encountered this.

I am just running the runtime on each machine, and loaded the patch into each...set the send to maxmsp runtime 1 on each, send on the master, recieve on the slave.

sounds right?

thanks in advance!

I just uploaded and added the URL link, so no need to worry about your eyesight, seeing as i did this in response to your original question! ;-)

Okay, so when i have been trying it, it has been with a 1.5GHz G5 running OS X 10.2 (or 10.3, can't remember off the top of my head). The tempo and sync has been completely stable (but i had to set an offset for the MIDI beat clock on the receiving end in Live).

Perhaps try the collections or the standalone applications?

Another suggestion: why don't you try running physical MIDI cables between the two computers?

riftinsound said...

yeah i am gonna try the midi cables too.

so you have used the osx network midi over lan sessions as well right?

thats what I am using right now, and its working decent. I thought I ended up there becuase it was tighter than using a midi cable connection....but i could be wrong. well see what happens.

Well, i have never had a chance to try the network session setup because i only have one computer with 10.4.

But... i have never had any issues syncing Live to either a mac or a PC using physical MIDI cabling. It has always been a reasonable sync for me...

Good luck, i hope that it works out for you!
