There is an unused 400MHz G3 iMac DV with OS9.2 lying around at our place (from 1999 or 2000). Today i connected an Arduino board to the computer and was able to communicate with it using the Serial object in Max/MSP 4.2. I did have to go and get the correct FTDI USB driver, though. The difficulty was sorting through extension conflicts (takes you back, doesn't it). But this is almost always a matter of time and elimination until it works. Runs smoothly once all of that was sorted.

Talking to Arduino in OS9
